Wellthy adjective - characterized by focusing on good habits to make it easier to make healthy choices to have a balanced, healthy life that includes enjoying simple pleasures without guilt.
We finally made it to the in-person 7th Annual Biohacking Conference. We were supposed to meet in March 2020 in Beverly Hills, CA, but they postponed the event due to the pandemic. In the meantime, we had two virtual conferences, which I wrote about here: Virtual Biohacking Conference 2020 Recap and Virtual Biohacking Conference 2021 Recap. This weekend’s meeting was at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Orlando, Florida.
After registration, I made a beeline to the cafe for some Bulletproof coffee. Dave has separated from the Bulletproof company (long story) and has been developing the next generation of coffee. We were the first ones to try the delicious new recipe. They were blending coffee non-stop, and it was free, so I had to stop myself from overdosing.
The conference featured Dave and guests’ keynote speeches, panel discussions, and breakout sessions covering various topics. They served lunch each day. Here is lunch from Day 1.

Dave shared his sleep results from his Oura ring for the first night when he arrived in Florida from the west coast. Even though he only had 6h 27m of total sleep, he still managed 1h 41m of REM sleep and 2h 11m of deep sleep. My average REM sleep is 2h 16m, and deep sleep is 1h 33m with an average total sleep time of 7h 57m. I need to work on that deep sleep number.
Vishen Lakhiani, found of Mindvalley, spoke about meditation as a powerful tool to enhance the mind. Vishen says to think of meditation as a technology. Many people say they’ve tried meditation, and it didn’t work. That’s like saying you tried exercise, and it didn’t work. There are as many forms of meditation as exercise, so you need to find what works for you.
Vishen also recommends a triple-gratitude practice. Take a few moments every day and write down what you are grateful for using the triple-gratitude approach:
Gratitude for something in your personal life
Gratitude for something in your work life
Gratitude for yourself
We clean the body everyday but what about cleaning the mind?
I Choose DANGER
Dave launched a new brand called I Choose DANGER. There was a board at the conference where people pinned messages about what they would do if they had no fear. Here are the five traits of what Dave calls a “dangerous person:”
Do the right thing, even when it’s hard.
Be peaceful and kind, even when others aren’t.
Decide based on data, not emotions.
Take calculated risks when it’s worth it.
Push yourself outside of your comfort zone.
Jim Kwik tells us how to be Limitless
Jim Kwik gave an excellent talk about memory and how the brain works. He shared the following framework:
Thoughts lead to Choices. Choices lead to Behaviors. Behaviors lead to Experiences. Experiences lead to Feelings. Feelings loop back around to Thoughts.
We learn best when pulling information out not when pushing info in. —Jim Kwik
One tip Jim shared for taking notes is to draw a line down the center of the page. Label the left column “Capture” and the right column “Create.” Use the left side to write down notes and things you hear. Use the right side for your thoughts as you answer the following questions:
“How can I use this?”
“How must I use this?”
“When will I use this?”
Jim Kwik uses the 3M method for learning:
Mindset, Methods, Motivation
Motivation + Mindset means you have inspiration, but you don’t have the methods to take action.
Mindset + Methods means you have plenty of great ideas and tools, but you don’t have the motivation to carry them out.
Motivation + Methods means you are implementing, but you may not be moving toward your goals if you don’t have the right mindset.
You need all three M’s for true integration.
I was grateful to be in the right place and the right time to meet Jim and get a signed copy of his latest book Limitless (affiliate link). I made him laugh when I admitted that I was ashamed I didn’t have his book yet. Jim was having conversations with everyone in line, and he is an extremely nice guy and very genuine. I can’t wait to dive into this book.
Dr. Joseph Mercola, The Most-Censored Doctor in the US
CNN labeled Dr. Mercola the #1 superspreader of COVID misinformation. He showed a video of where a CNN reporter tracked him down at the beach near his home in Florida. He has to travel with security because of the many threats leveled against him. Dr. Mercola has been ahead of the curve on many topics, including mercury fillings and excessive fluoride. He has raised serious questions about the official story we’re told about COVID-19 and the vaccines that he documents in his book The Truth About COVID-19 (affiliate link).
Regardless of where you stand on COVID or vaccines, Dr. Mercola’s primary message is that we all need to do everything we can to get healthy and stay healthy. He offered the following suggestions:
Vitamin D - Know your level and supplement if you are not at the optimum level. I wrote about Vitamin D in a previous newsletter.
Exercise - Strength and cardio training. His favorite exercise is blood flow restriction training. You can find out more information in this video.
Time-restricted eating - Use some form of intermittent fasting to compress your eating window to 6-8 hours, and stop eating 3-4 hours before bed.
Reduce intake of linoleic acid - Linoleic acid is an omega-6 fat that Dr. Mercola calls one of the most pernicious foods. The right fats are essential because fat makes up the membranes of every cell in your body. If you eat a lot of sugar, you either burn it off or store it as fat. If you eat the wrong kind of fats, they become part of your body for a long time. Most of us keep seven years of linoleic acid in our cell membranes. You can use the chronometer app to calculate how much linoleic acid is in foods.
Dr. Mercola recommends avoiding the following foods due to the high amounts of linoleic acid:
Chicken
Pork
Most olive and avocado oils (They dilute cheap ones with harmful oils.)
All processed foods
Virtually all seeds and nuts
Any sauce or dressing at a restaurant
Kryptonite vs. Super Human Panel
On Day 3, Dave moderated a panel with Dr. Jill Carnahan, Dr. Ann Shippy, and Dr. Daniel Pompa discussing toxins and proper detox. The elephant in the room is environmental toxins. There is no one-time cleanse or detox. We should be detoxing every day.
80% of the environmental toxins we are exposed to are in the air.
Adequate Glutathione levels are critical in supporting the body’s ability to detox.
Activated charcoal, liposomal Glutathione, and CytoDetox are three supplements that help support detox for the body.
Tech Hall and Tech Playground
I can’t even begin to summarize all the excellent supplements, gear, and tech in the Tech Hall and Tech Playground. These were two large rooms filled with various booths where companies provided samples and let you try out all the cool stuff.
I discovered that my foot alignment is off, which is causing me some hip issues. The rep from Aline showed me how my feet are misaligned. Aline insoles provide active alignment and equal weight distribution to allow your feet to function correctly. I will be wearing these insoles in my shoes from now on, and no more walking around the house barefoot. I need house shoes with Aline insoles as well to get back on track.
Let’s just say I found a lot of goodies in the Tech Hall and Tech Playground.
A CAROL bike courtesy of Tony Molina
I saw a sign in the hallway that read, “Win one of two CAROL bikes!”
The CAROL bike is a revolutionary new exercise bike that uses artificial intelligence to learn about cardiovascular fitness. The CAROL workouts are based on the science of REHIT - Reduced Exertion High-Intensity Interval Training. You pedal at a leisurely pace for three minutes, then an all-out sprint for 20 seconds, then another easy three minutes, another all-out sprint for 20 seconds, and a final three minutes for cooldown. The entire workout takes nine minutes and 40 seconds. Using CAROL three times a week for eight weeks has doubled the health and fitness gains compared to traditional exercise. You had me at less than 10 minutes.
I tried out the introductory workout that uses 10-second sprints instead of 20 seconds. I felt like I got a workout after that. Performing the demo granted me an entry to the giveaway.
Dave gave away tens of thousands of dollars in prizes the whole weekend. The kicker is that you have to be in the room when your name is called. The first CAROL bike winner was a woman. He called the second name: Tony Molina. No one stood up. Dave said, “No Tony Molina?? Well, the next person on the list is going to be grateful to Tony….” And then he read my name!! I couldn’t believe it! This is not a cheap bike ($2400). This is the universe telling me it’s time to get more physically active. I accept the challenge and will review my experience with the CAROL bike in a future newsletter. Thank you, Tony Molina!
It was so great to meet other Upgrade Collective members. The Upgrade Collective is a fantastic community of people. We are all learning from Dave and working on becoming better versions of ourselves. I was also excited to meet BeWellthy subscribers. Oh, and I almost forgot, I was able to meet one other person…
I am grateful for the opportunity to attend this event in person, and I applaud all the people who took the time to spend the weekend in person or online learning about ways to improve their lives.
It was so great to see smiles and not masks. There were people shaking hands and hugging instead of keeping their distance. In these brief three days, it felt normal again. Among many things, this experience gave me hope that we will make it out of this pandemic. Stay strong and Be Wellthy!
Do you do anything to improve yourself this last weekend? If not, what will you do next weekend?
