If you live in North America, you likely had to “leap forward” an hour yesterday, which means you’re still adjusting to the time change and probably need another cup of coffee or tea. By the way, what is your preferred morning beverage? Let’s have a poll.
I am #Teamcoffee, not to be confused with #Teamcovfefe, and I usually enjoy one cup every morning, approximately 2-2.5 hours after waking up.
When I was a kid, my mom made coffee using an old-fashioned electric percolator. Those seem to have gone out of fashion. I still like my coffee the way she made it- with a bit of half and half and no sweetener. I’ve been adjusting my tastes to take coffee black for the benefits. When you add a dairy product to coffee, the casein proteins bind to some of the beneficial compounds in coffee, rendering them unabsorbable. In addition, traditional coffee brewing that uses a paper filter also poses a problem. The brown color on the filter reflects the oils and polyphenols filtered out along with the grounds. So, drinking coffee brewed with a paper filter and adding cream basically reduces the beverage to little more than brown-colored water.
My standard brewing method has been a French press with a metal filter for many years. I also recently started using the Pure Over system, which utilizes the pour-over method with an all-glass apparatus. While these methods provide the purest form of coffee, they are time-consuming. Sometimes, I want a quick cup.
I got into pod-based coffee when the Keurig craze took off. I upgraded from a Keurig to a Nespresso machine a few years ago. Eventually, I was tired of the degradation in flavor, the dubious quality of the coffee in the pods, the risk of bacteria and mold, and the environmental impact. I was looking for a better alternative in the pod-based coffee realm, and I think I found it with Bruvi.
The Bruvi has several advantages over other pod-based brewing systems.
Environmentally friendly B-Pods are designed to be readily biodegradable without creating microplastics. The B-Pods hold up to 40% more coffee than traditional pods and offer a double espresso shot.
The Bruvi scans each pod and auto adjusts up to seven brew parameters, e.g., hotter, stronger, low acid, etc., along with eight cup sizes. There is an option for iced coffee, which brews like hot coffee but lowers the temperature to minimize dilution when you add ice. A cold brew option also brews at a lower temperature and longer time for a smoother, less acidic flavor.
The system is designed to brew the coffee within each pod, so the coffee goes straight into your cup without touching the insides of the brewer. I was convinced after I saw this blue dye test, which showed back-to-back brewings with no contamination.
The company focuses on sustainability and high-quality coffee brands but also allows reusable pods to use your favorite coffee.
The Bruvi has Wi-Fi to connect to an app that allows you to control the brewer from your phone and schedule brews.
