So much for sparkling water
But here's something you can add instead and announcing the brain training monthly raffle!
I’m Brandon Wilson. I am constantly working toward improving my mind, body, and spirit using various ancient techniques and cutting-edge biohacking tools and devices. I want to be healthy, but not at the expense of being happy. This simple idea is what it means to be wellthy.
First time reading? Let’s get you in the club.
From 1886 - 1929, Coca-Cola contained varying amounts of cocaine. It was legal and treated as a medicine. Nowadays, cocaine is a Schedule II drug under the Controlled Substances Act. It has a high potential for abuse and is an accepted medical use for treatment in the United States. Nevertheless, they took the cocaine out of Coca-Cola.
Then, they took away regular Coke, Pepsi, Sprite, Mtn Dew, etc., because of all the sugar. Yes, that means even the Coke in glass bottles from Mexico with pure cane sugar. Ok, fine, then drink diet drinks, right? Nope.
They took away Diet Coke, Diet Pepsi, Coke Zero, etc., because while these drinks may have zero calories, artificial sweeteners have their problems. Artificial sweeteners may overstimulate sugar receptors causing you to crave more sweets. They may also be addictive, and they are linked to issues with the gut microbiome and inflammation in the digestive system.1 On top of that, artificial sweeteners are actually linked to weight gain.
So I weaned myself off sugary drinks and artificial sweeteners. I’ve been drinking unsweetened sparkling water with Topo Chico as my favorite. No calories, no sweeteners, just some added carbon dioxide. It should be fine, right?
Now they are taking away sparkling water! A study in 20172 found that carbonated water increases a hormone called ghrelin in rats and men. Ghrelin is the “hunger hormone” that makes you feel hungry and more likely to eat more. The study authors speculate that cells in the stomach that are sensitive to pressure may respond to the carbon dioxide in beverages by increasing ghrelin production.
So let’s review. No cocaine. No sugary drinks. No drinks with artificial sweeteners. No carbonated water. At least we still have coffee and the drink whose name rhymes with the eventual act of voiding it from the bladder. Other than that, all that’s left is plain, filtered water. How boring. You know that’s not good enough for me. Lately, I’ve been adding a little something extra to my water.
Chronic inflammation contributes to the pain many people experience, occurring through injury or many diseases. Research has shown that the COX-2 enzyme is the primary driver of inflammation. Many over-the-counter pain pills in the category of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, naproxen, and ibuprofen block the COX-2 enzyme from causing inflammation. Unfortunately, frequent and prolonged use of NSAIDs could lead to harmful side effects.
H2 is the smallest bio-available molecule in the universe, representing 90% of living matter. Molecular hydrogen is a different and much more effective type of antioxidant. Molecular hydrogen works in two ways: 1) downregulates COX-2, and 2) upregulates glutathione, the body’s master antioxidant. This action helps bring oxidative stress back into balance in all of the body’s cells.
Benefits of Molecular Hydrogen
May help reduce pain
May increase energy and focus
May support sports performance and recovery
Supports cardiovascular and liver health
I learned about molecular hydrogen at the biohacking conference from a company called HydroTab. You drop one tablet in 10-12 ounces of water in a glass or metal container. Watch as the tablet slowly dissolves and the bubbles form as the hydrogen is released. After a minute or two, gulp it down. It has a subtle citrus taste.
Thankfully, I don’t have chronic pain, but I can use the help with inflammation. I’ve added molecular hydrogen to my daily supplement stack.
If you are interested in trying molecular hydrogen, you can purchase a bottle through HydroTab. Dr. Mercola also offers his own version. The Gladden Longevity Podcast also offers molecular hydrogen tablets, and you can learn more about molecular hydrogen in Episode #111 of the Living Beyond 120 podcast.
Evaluate your hydration level by checking the color of your pee. You want a light yellow to deep amber color. If your pee is completely clear, you may be drinking too much water. Also, this urologist recommends the twenty-second bladder rule. It takes roughly 20 seconds for a full bladder to empty for most large mammals, including humans.
Starting with today’s puzzle, send me your answers via email or DM Be Wellthy on Twitter. Each correct answer will win you an entry into a monthly raffle where I will pull a name and give away a cool biohacking prize. You must be a Be Wellthy subscriber to be eligible.
Each of the nine letters used in this word square represents a different digit 1 through 9. The numbers outside the grid show the results of multiplying the values of the letters in each row and column. Can you determine the values of the letters and fill the empty grid with the corresponding numbers?
