The 3-Hobby Rule That Could Change Your Life (Seriously)

When I was a hiring manager, aside from the typical questions like “What is your biggest strength/weakness,” “Where do you see yourself in five years,” and “If you were in a meeting and a raccoon wandered into the office, would you make it a team mascot or report it to HR,” I liked asking candidates about their hobbies. It was delightful to see them light up as they talked about activities they truly enjoyed.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary provides the following definition:
hobby (n) - a pursuit outside one's regular occupation engaged in especially for relaxation
When was the last time you picked up a hobby because it made you feel alive? Do you consider hobbies something nice to have but not necessary? I want to make the case that hobbies are a critical part of wellness with the 3-Hobby Rule, which states that everyone should have three hobbies: one to make you creative, one to keep you in shape, and one to make you money. Let’s explore each one in more detail.
#1 One Hobby to Make You Creative 🎨
Purpose: Nurtures the soul, sparks joy, lets you play.
Examples: Journaling, painting, playing a musical instrument, photography, bird-watching, creating audio or video content, pottery, DIY crafts, cooking, fishing, etc.
Benefits: Creativity reduces stress, improves brain function, and helps you reconnect with your inner child. It's wellness disguised as play.
Prompt: What did 10-year-old you love doing just for fun?
I’ll share with you a hobby I started during the pandemic. Remember the chaos and doom-and-gloom in the world at that time? I had the habit of recording audio clips of ideas that made me laugh. I wanted to learn how to create a podcast, and The Brandonian Doctrine was born in April of 2020. For those of you who may not know me that well, I have an oddball sense of humor. Here is one of my favorite clips:

#2 One Hobby to Keep You in Shape 🏃♀️
Purpose: Movement = medicine, but make it something you enjoy.
Examples: Dance classes, hiking, yoga, rock climbing, swimming, martial arts, pilates, pickleball, long walks with a good podcast, etc.
Benefits: Physical activity isn't punishment — it's a celebration. Move in ways that make you feel strong, joyful, and alive. Dr. Peter Attia has stated that current scientific research makes it clear that there is no more potent tool for longevity and health than exercise.
Prompt: If the gym disappeared tomorrow, how would you move your body just for the joy of it?
As long-time subscribers know, this one is challenging for me. My worst nightmares are those where I recall being in physical education class in high school. I have the constitution of a poker player, able to sit for hours on end with little movement. But I’m working on this. My favorite physical activity is still playing table tennis virtually on the Meta VR system. 🏓
#3 One Hobby to Make You Money 💸
Purpose: Flex your skills, fuel your passions, and maybe earn a little something extra.
Examples: Freelance writing, reselling vintage clothes, flipping furniture, investing, tutoring, digital art, dog walking, starting a side hustle, or even monetizing one of the first two hobbies.
Benefits: Financial wellness is part of overall wellness. A money-making hobby can offer independence, purpose, and confidence.
Prompt: What’s something you love doing that others might pay you for?
This newsletter has been a hobby for over four years, and I was nervous about adding the paid membership. Would connecting money to something I enjoy make it feel more like work? Thankfully, I enjoy producing this newsletter just as much, if not more than when I started. I appreciate all my subscribers who have joined me on this journey.
Consider making more time for your hobbies. They aren’t just a nice-to-have; they are critical for your well-being.
