You may have noticed through recent topics that I’ve been focused on detoxification. While there are many aspects to consider, my doctor suggested that I look into colon hydrotherapy to support my detox regimen. Considering I had never done it, I wasn’t exactly rushing to book an appointment. After all, what’s so special about the colon?
The colon is the longest part of the large intestine, which is attached to the small intestine at one end and the anus at the other. The role of the colon is to eliminate stool made up of a combination of bacteria, water, unused nutrients, unneeded electrolytes, and digested food.
The colon is home to billions of bacteria that comprise approximately 70 percent of the dry weight of feces. Besides forming stool, the various beneficial bacteria living within the colon and digestive tract are essential for proper nutrient absorption, maintaining pH balance, controlling hunger, and counteracting potentially dangerous bacteria. Without question, a well-functioning colon is vital for overall well-being.
A poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, and exposure to environmental toxins can all wreak havoc on the digestive system. I’ve certainly put my system through its paces, and I was intrigued by the idea of cleansing my colon safely. I also researched the purported benefits.
Purported Benefits of Colon Hydrotherapy
Prevents and relieves constipation
Decrease the risk of colon cancer
Improved digestion
Assists with weight loss
Increased energy levels
Improved concentration and mood
Improves immune system
For those of you who want the scientific literature to back up these claims, I’ll save you the time. There isn’t much. In my research, I kept seeing phrases like “anecdotal evidence” and “benefits not supported in published literature.”1 How would you perform a blinded, placebo-controlled trial of colon hydrotherapy? So mainstream medicine is probably going to tell you there’s no reason to get a colonic unless you are preparing for a medical procedure.
