I’m Brandon Wilson. I am constantly working toward improving my mind, body, and spirit using various ancient techniques and cutting-edge biohacking tools and devices. I want to be healthy, but not at the expense of being happy. This simple idea is what it means to be wellthy.
First time reading? Let’s get you in the club.
I attended Saturday’s True Food Summit at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, AZ. The event was organized by the Arizona Chapter of Children's Health Defense, founded by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. This organization is committed to restoring and protecting children's health by eliminating environmental exposures, holding responsible parties accountable, and establishing safeguards to prevent future harm. The summit aimed to educate about food supply issues, provide information about self-sufficiency, and build communities.
The Master of Ceremonies was Robert Scott Bell, a homeopathic physician and host of the Robert Scott Bell Show for over twenty-five years, where he reminds his listeners that the power to heal is yours. I’ve learned that if RSB is at an event, there will be fantastic information and people.
Mary S. Holland, Esq., CEO of Children’s Health Defense, started the day with an eye-opening presentation based on an op-ed by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. published in the Wall Street Journal in September 2024.
Mary shared some alarming statistics:
Among American teens, close to 30% are prediabetic.
More than 18% of young adults have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
More than 40% of adults aged 22-44 are obese.
In 2020, 77% of young adults didn’t qualify for the military based on their health scores.
Six out of ten adults in America are living with a chronic illness. 74% of American adults are overweight or obese.
Regardless of your opinion of RFK Jr and the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) movement, this crisis should not be political.
While there are many complex reasons why the U.S. population's health is deteriorating, a toxic environment that poisons our food is pretty high on the list. Few people have more experience helping people heal from toxicity than Dr. Henry Ealy.
Dr. Henry Ealy is a naturopathic doctor board-certified in holistic nutrition and founder of the Energetic Health Institute. Dr. H shared some frightening information about weather modification and how the chemicals used to seed clouds contribute to the heavy metal content in the soil and, by extension, our food. I have much to learn about this topic, and I will start with this resource he shared.
Perhaps the most eye-opening presentation was the last by Zen Honeycutt, founder and Executive Director of Moms Across America. Zen has been a tireless champion, educator, and advocate for children and families to transform the food supply and help people make better food choices. Zen pointed out that toxins like glyphosate and heavy metals are the most significant harms in our food supply.
Glyphosate is a chemical sprayed as a drying agent or pre-harvest weed killer on grains, peas, beans, and legumes. Companies use glyphosate as a pre-harvest drying agent to harvest crops like oats sooner than if the plants were allowed to dry naturally. This practice allows easier harvesting but also increases the likelihood that the pesticide makes it into foods. In March 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, or IARC – an arm of the World Health Organization classified glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic to humans.”1 In April 2019, the U.S. Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry released an analysis that gave weight to studies connecting glyphosate and non-Hodgkin lymphoma and recommended monitoring children’s exposure to this toxic weedkiller.2 We should avoid exposure to glyphosate; shockingly, it is ubiquitous in the food supply. With Zen’s permission, I will share some slides from her presentation. Brace yourselves.
We all know fast food lacks nutrition, but were you aware of just how toxic it is?
At least your kids are getting proper nutrition at school, right? Umm, no.
You’re not off the hook if you follow a gluten-free diet.
Perhaps most despicable is the level of toxins in baby formula.
Here is one more disappointing example.
It’s time to wake up and realize that we must be vigilant about our exposure to toxins in the environment and our food.
Tips to Protect Yourself
Buy whole foods and not highly processed foods.
Buy local organic food, especially grains.
Research product toxicity with sites like Mamavation, Lead Safe Mama, Environmental Working Group, and The Weston A. Price Foundation.
Avoid products that contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs): corn, soy, sugar, canola, and vegetable oil.
Consider growing some of your own food. It is a daunting task for those of us who would be starting at level zero, but I’m open to considering the option.
Engage in regular activity that makes you sweat, such as sauna or cardiovascular exercise. Sweating is a crucial pathway the body uses to detoxify.
Be more selective about dining out. Consider taking activated charcoal with the meal if you’re eating at a restaurant with dubious ingredients and preparation methods.
This event wasn’t all doom and gloom. I had a wonderful experience at the LOTUSWEI booth learning about flower elixirs. I noticed a difference when experiencing their anointing oil compared to typical essential oils. I also purchased some delicious flower-infused dark chocolate.
There were plenty of farmers and horticulture experts, perhaps none more famous than “the Lunatic Farmer” Joel Salatin. He co-owns the regenerative Polyface Farm in Swoope, Virginia. Featured in the New York Times bestseller Omnivore’s Dilemma and award-winning documentary Food Inc., the farm services more than 5,000 families, 10 restaurants, and five retail outlets with salad bar beef, pork, pastured poultry, and forestry products. Joel mentioned that before the election, he was approached about an advisory role to the Secretary of the USDA. We can only hope that Joel will join the incoming administration to help reshape regulations and the overall landscape of industrial farming.
While I always appreciate the information shared at these events, I am even more grateful for the connections to communities of like-minded individuals who have a heart for serving and helping others become the best versions of themselves.
The Daily Habit is where I share my habits related to the fundamentals: sleep, diet, physical activity, mindfulness, and stress management.
