Most of us have had an energy drink here or there. For me, it’s usually on a rare occasion when I’m traveling or at an all-day conference. It turns out that when you have your sleep dialed in and you employ various biohacks, you can have plenty of energy.
Here are the top five energy drinks by sales in the US:
Red Bull
Monster
Celsius
Bang
Rockstar
Do you drink any of these regularly? After learning about one particular ingredient, you may want to reconsider your energy drink consumption.
Gary Brecka is a human biologist who shares information to help people improve their health. In this talk, Gary covers various health topics, but around the 30-minute mark, he discusses cyanocobalamin, a synthetic form of vitamin B12.
The summary is cyanocobalamin is a synthetic form of B12 made from hydrogen cyanide, a flammable, acutely toxic environmental hazard that is also used as a chemical weapon!1 By the way, this form of B12 is found in many supplements, protein powders, and energy drinks, including Monster, Celsius, and Rockstar. I scoured the Red Bull website and could not find any indication of what form of B12 they use. Bang uses methylcobalamin, which is a better form of B12.
Another problem with most energy drinks is sugar; zero-sugar varieties usually contain artificial sweeteners. On top of that, virtually all energy drinks have caffeine. The average 16-oz energy drink contains 210 mg of caffeine, which is on par with coffee. I have nothing against caffeine, but we metabolize it differently based on genetics; some are more sensitive than others.
Wouldn’t it be great if there were a better alternative to traditional energy drinks that is zero-calorie with clean and natural ingredients that can give you an energy boost without the jitters and crashes associated with caffeine?
