First time reading? Let’s get you in the club.
I shared my supplement stack in Part 1 of this series, emphasizing the benefits of taking specific vitamins and minerals together. In Part 2, I’m sharing information about the supplements that don’t play nice together.
Before we begin, I would like to provide my obligatory disclaimer. I’m not a doctor, and this is not medical advice. The information I share is for educational purposes only. Always consult with a trusted healthcare professional before taking any supplements.
Tip #1: Take activated charcoal and other binders away from all supplements.
As I mentioned in a previous newsletter, activated charcoal is a must-have in your cabinet to aid in digestion and absorption of certain toxins. The caveat is that activated charcoal will also absorb supplements and pharmaceuticals. Bentonite clay, zeolite, apple pectin, and excess soluble fiber also bind to vitamins and minerals. Take binders at least two hours away from other supplements and medications.
Tip #2: Be careful with iron, calcium, and zinc.
Iron and calcium compete for absorption at the same sites. High doses of iron can also block zinc absorption. Zinc and calcium compete for absorption. By the way, the main component in green tea (EGCG) binds with iron and reduces its absorption. Take supplements that compete with each other 1-2 hours apart.
Tip #3: Avoid vitamin C with aluminum-containing antacids.
Aluminum hydroxide is a common active ingredient in antacids like Maalox and Mylanta. Vitamin C increases the solubility of aluminum in the gut and enhances its absorption into the bloodstream.1 Antacids do not address the root cause of acid reflux, but that’s a topic for another day.
Tip #4: Don’t take vitamin C with B12.
Studies have shown that taking 500 mg of vitamin C simultaneously with vitamin B12 may reduce B12 absorption and activity.2 Keep it simple and take these vitamins alphabetically: B12 first, followed by vitamin C two hours later.
Tip #5: Niacin and red yeast rice can amplify effects when taken together.
Niacin (vitamin B3) is used to lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Red yeast rice contains monacolin K, a natural statin. Both target cholesterol reduction and may amplify side effects, such as muscle pain/weakness, elevated liver enzymes, flushing, headache, and digestive distress. I happen to think cholesterol has been unfairly demonized, but that’s a topic for another newsletter.
Tip #6: Balance zinc and copper.
Zinc supplementation interferes with copper absorption. The recommended ratio of zinc to copper is in the range of 10:1 to 15:1. When supplementing with zinc, look for a supplement with the proper ratio, such as Bulletproof Zinc with Copper or Mitolife Zinc+.
There are many potential interactions with supplements and pharmaceuticals. If you are taking any prescription medications, research which supplements (primarily herbal) may interact with or alter the action of the drug.

MAHA AI is the latest app (available for iOS and Google Play) that helps you verify ingredients for packaged foods, drinks, and supplements. Take a picture of the nutrition panel/ingredients list, and the app will provide a score and identify questionable ingredients, along with suggestions for healthier alternatives. I warn you that this app is very strict, and don’t be surprised to find some of your beloved items on the naughty list. The app offers a free trial and an annual subscription for $29.99.
