I’m Brandon Wilson. I am constantly working toward improving my mind, body, and spirit using various ancient techniques and cutting-edge biohacking tools and devices. I want to be healthy, but not at the expense of being happy. This simple idea is what it means to be wellthy.
First time reading? Let’s get you in the club.
From the beginning of this newsletter, I have focused on brain health as one of the foundational tenets. After all, there is no wheelchair for the brain. If your brain goes catawampus, you’re in bad shape.
I’ve written about my experiments with several brain training devices. The Mendi helps increase focus. The FocusCalm headband uses games and real-time feedback to train you to focus while staying calm. My go-to device has been BrainTap, which combines lights and sounds with guided meditations to help you achieve certain brain states. I’m excited to tell you about the latest brain-training gadget I’ve been testing, which may be my new favorite.
Meet the NeuroVizr
At the Bio Biz Bash event in September, I had hands-on demonstrations with many products, including brain training devices. I tried the Roxiva device, which had high hopes but was disappointing. I had a BrainTap session in the Revibe chair, which was an incredible experience. Finally, I had my first experience with the NeuroVizr courtesy of the NOA|AON booth.
The NeuroVizr is a small LED light panel attached to a headset. It connects to your phone via Bluetooth, and you control it with the app. Put on your favorite headphones or earbuds, select a program, and sit or lie down comfortably with your eyes closed.
I was unprepared for the whole-body experience that occurred for the next eleven minutes. Even though the LEDs were full-spectrum white lights, I saw a vast array of colors and geometric shapes dancing in front of me. The music and synchronized tones helped create a total-body experience. After that short session, I felt a complete shift in my brain and body. I had a sense of calm and relaxation, but I also felt energized and in a happy mood. No other brain training device I’ve tried has given me an experience like this.
I was fortunate that Garnet Dupuis, the inventor of NeuroVizr, was in the US and at this event. I asked him what makes his device unique, and he gave me a detailed and thorough explanation. It’s not that NeuroVizr is better or worse than devices like BrainTap. He said BrainTap and similar devices take a “top-down” approach. They use brain entrainment to achieve a particular brain state that cascades to the rest of the body. NeuroVizr uses a “bottom-up” approach that he calls Brain Engagement. Garnet explained that the algorithms are structured similarly to how a movie director edits a film. The light and sound signals lead the brain, allowing it to fill in the gaps. This approach derives from scientific research that shows that the adult human brain is capable of positive adaptive neuroplastic growth when provided with the appropriate stimuli. Meeting the inventor and understanding his approach made me even more confident that the NeuroVizr is a unique and powerful device. I purchased one and have been using it daily for 66 days.
The app library contains over 100 sessions categorized among various programs:
Neuro-Athletics (25 sessions) - Neurological and psychological training, unstick stuck, pre-performance, and post-performance.
Meditation (8 sessions) - Lucid meditations.
Mind States (22 sessions) - Sessions to create, explore, focus, relax, and improve mood.
Better Sleep (12 sessions) - Harmonize your circadian cycle with sessions based on the time of day.
Brain Gym (20 sessions) - Sessions designed to build brain performance, neural networks, and entrainment.
Brain Optimizer (13 sessions) - Optimize your brain to process trauma or change habits.
Microdose (45 sessions) - Drug-free microdosing to help with trauma, blockage, burnout, calm, confidence, creativity, deep thought, dependency, focus, intuition, learning, motivation, resilience, solitude, and uplift.
The personal guide provides a deep dive into the science and explains the programs in detail. I have tried sessions from each program, and they work as described. I prefer to do morning sessions shortly after waking up, but I’ve also done afternoon sessions for a boost and evening sessions to support sleep. Most programs are eleven minutes, which permits the average brain to maintain adequate attention to trigger and sustain neuroplastic change. Some of the sessions are five minutes long. The only sessions I have not explored fully are the microdose ones, but I have no doubt they will be effective based on my experience with the other sessions.
The NeuroVizr is not a toy and may not be ideal for everyone. I always advise people to consult with a trusted healthcare professional before experimenting with devices like these, especially people with epilepsy, seizure disorders, acute psychosis, vertigo, eye disorders, or photosensitivity.
