I want to propose a new one: WWYFSD - What Would Your Future Self Do? As I noted in the April summary, I recently finished Be Your Future Self Now by Dr. Benjamin Hardy, which has been one of the most impactful books on my mindset that I’ve read in a long time.
Speaking of books, how many books have you read this year? According to the latest data, about 63% of American adults reported reading at least one book in 2024.1 Worldwide, the US leads the world with an average of 17 books read per person per year, followed by India (16 books), the UK (15 books), France (14 books), and Italy (13 books).2
The stats are encouraging, but remember, knowledge is not power. What good is investing your time and money into a book if nothing changes after you read it? I will skip my takeaways from the book and go straight to the practical habits I’m incorporating daily to accelerate my transformation.
7 Daily Habits to Embody Your Future Self
1. Future Self Meditation (2-7 minutes)
Every morning, close your eyes and picture the person you want to become in one, three, or five years. Create a future image of yourself and embody a posture of standing or sitting up straight as you imagine you are that person. Visualize how your Future Self thinks, feels, acts, and handles challenges. Listen to binaural beats or anything that moves your spirit.
2. Set one Future-Self-aligned priority.
Plan your day the night before and identify the one priority that will create a win. Block off time. Put it in your calendar. Do this activity first. No matter what happens, this is the day's most important task. Ask yourself, “What would my Future Self delegate today?”
“Either you run the day or the day runs you.” —Jim Rohn
3. Eliminate one distraction.
Each day, choose one small habit or distraction to reduce. Most likely, your phone is a big culprit, and I shared tips for managing your phone instead of letting your phone manage you in a previous newsletter. Turn off non-critical notifications. Schedule essential calls and meetings. Be present when you’re with people. Eliminate lesser goals that are distracting you from your committed goals.
“We are kept from our goal not by obstacles, but by a clear path to a lesser goal.” —Robert Brault
4. Journal as your Future Self.
Start a daily journal entry as your Future Self: “Today, I am proud of you for…” or “Here’s how I handled today’s challenge…” Writing like your Future Self helps solidify the mindset and behaviors you want to develop.
5. Celebrate today’s aligned action.
Write down at least one win where you acted like your Future Self. This practice builds self-efficacy and reinforces identity transformation.
6. Practice gratitude and self-compassion.
Reflect on progress and show gratitude for your efforts, even small ones. Being hard on your current self can sabotage growth. Future Self development requires patience and trust.
“It’s better to fail at the level of your Future Self than succeed as your current self.” —Dr. Benjamin Hardy
7. Recommit each evening.
Before going to sleep, mentally recommit to your Future Self vision. Visualize, journal, or imagine that connection with your Future Self as you drift off to sleep. Before sleep, you are in a highly suggestible brain state (alpha/theta). The subconscious mind is more open to reprogramming. Your thoughts immediately before sleep are critical.
If you’re already doing some of these, fantastic! Add another one to your daily routine. If you’d like to start, you don’t have to go whole hog. Pick one habit each day to implement. Here’s a graphic you can keep handy on your phone to remember these habits.
This summary is my take, and you are on your unique journey. If this content resonates, I strongly encourage you to read the book and customize your experience.
